At Simply Radiant, we’re committed to offering advanced aesthetic technology that gives our patients more options for addressing their individual skin concerns. Our Sciton technology now includes both the JOULE and mJOULE platforms, giving our team access to a range of laser and light-based treatments.

So, what is the difference between the two platforms, and what does the addition of mJOULE mean for you as a patient? Here’s what you should know.

For more information about the technology behind these treatments, explore our Sciton laser treatments at Simply Radiant.

What Are JOULE and mJOULE?

Both JOULE and mJOULE are modular platforms from Sciton, designed to support different laser and light-based treatment technologies.

The JOULE platform is Sciton’s larger, highly expandable system. Depending on its configuration, it can accommodate up to 11 treatment modules and support a broad range of aesthetic, medical, and surgical applications. It requires a 200–240V, 20-amp power supply.

The mJOULE platform is a more compact system designed for a smaller clinical footprint. It operates on a standard 110V, 20-amp power supply and can support technologies including MOXI, BBL HEROic, ClearV, and ClearSilk, depending on configuration.

The key difference isn’t simply that one platform is “better” than the other. They are designed with different configurations and capabilities. For patients, the addition of mJOULE means access to additional Sciton technologies and treatment options at Simply Radiant.

What Does mJOULE Add?

One of the most notable additions is MOXI, Sciton’s non-ablative fractional 1927 nm laser. mJOULE can also be configured with technologies such as BBL HEROic, ClearV, and ClearSilk.

That gives your provider more options when determining which technology is appropriate for your specific skin concerns, treatment goals, and skin type.

MOXI: Gentle Skin Rejuvenation and Prejuvenation

MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser designed to improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation, skin tone and texture. Sciton positions MOXI as a “prejuvenation” treatment for people who want to maintain and improve the appearance of their skin before more pronounced signs of aging develop.

Rather than removing the surface layer of skin, MOXI delivers fractionated laser energy to create microscopic treatment zones. The skin then goes through its natural healing process.

After treatment, you may notice small dark spots known as MENDs (Microscopic Epidermal Necrotic Debris). Sciton states that these can appear after treatment and typically slough off between days 3 and 5.

MOXI is designed to involve minimal downtime, although the experience varies from patient to patient. Temporary redness, swelling, dryness, or MENDs can occur during the healing process.

An average full-face MOXI treatment takes approximately 8–10 minutes, excluding any time needed for numbing.

For patients looking for a treatment that can address overall skin tone and texture without the downtime associated with more aggressive resurfacing procedures, MOXI may be an option worth discussing with your provider.

BBL HEROic: Faster BroadBand Light Treatments

BBL HEROic is Sciton’s advanced BroadBand Light technology for treating a variety of skin concerns.

The technology builds on Sciton’s BBL HERO platform, which was designed to deliver substantially faster treatment than earlier BBL technology while incorporating increased peak power and enhanced cooling.

Sciton states that BBL HERO introduced:

  • 4× the speed of the original BBL technology
  • 3× the peak power
  • 2× the cooling

BBL HEROic builds on this technology with features including intelligent control and automated pulse delivery.

The result is a platform designed to make large-area BBL treatments more efficient while giving providers greater control over treatment delivery.

Treatment time varies depending on the area being treated and the specific protocol. Certain large treatment areas can be treated within minutes.

What Does This Mean for You?

The most important benefit of having access to mJOULE isn’t simply having a newer machine. It’s having more treatment options available to match different skin concerns and treatment goals.

For Uneven Skin Tone and Texture

MOXI uses non-ablative fractional laser technology to address concerns such as uneven pigmentation, skin tone, and texture. It may be appropriate for patients looking for gradual skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime.

For Pigmentation and Certain Vascular Concerns

BBL HEROic uses BroadBand Light technology to target specific chromophores in the skin. Depending on the treatment protocol, BBL can be used to address concerns such as unwanted pigmentation and visible redness.

For Vascular Concerns

ClearV is a vascular laser technology designed to target visible vascular lesions. Your provider can determine whether ClearV is appropriate based on the specific vascular concern being treated.

For Overall Skin Appearance

ClearSilk is a non-ablative laser treatment designed for skin rejuvenation. It can be used as part of a personalized treatment plan depending on your skin concerns and goals.

Not every patient needs every technology. Your provider will determine which treatment, wavelength, settings, and treatment schedule are appropriate for you.

Precision Comes From the Treatment Plan, Not Just the Machine

Having access to advanced technology is only one part of effective laser treatment.

Your provider also needs to consider factors such as:

  • Your skin type and tone
  • The specific concern being treated
  • Treatment area
  • Desired outcome
  • Previous treatments
  • Your tolerance for downtime
  • The appropriate energy and treatment parameters

That’s why two patients receiving treatment with the same platform may have very different treatment plans.

The goal isn’t simply to use the newest technology. It’s to select the right technology and treatment approach for your individual needs.

What Can You Expect During Treatment?

Your experience will depend on the specific technology being used.

With BBL HEROic

Patients may experience a brief sensation of warmth during treatment. Temporary redness can occur afterward, and pigmentation treated with BBL may temporarily appear darker before gradually fading.

Treatment time varies by area and protocol, but BBL HEROic is designed to make large-area treatments more efficient.

With MOXI

MOXI treatments can cause temporary redness, warmth, or swelling. Small dark spots known as MENDs may develop as part of the skin’s healing process and typically shed over several days.

Because MOXI is a non-ablative treatment, downtime is generally minimal, but individual recovery can vary.

Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions based on the treatment you receive.

Is mJOULE Better Than JOULE?

That’s not really the right way to look at these platforms.

JOULE and mJOULE are different configurations designed for different clinical needs. JOULE is the larger, highly expandable platform, while mJOULE provides a more compact platform capable of supporting technologies such as MOXI, BBL HEROic, ClearV, and ClearSilk.

For patients at Simply Radiant, what matters is not which platform is “better.” What matters is having access to the appropriate technology for your specific concern and treatment goals.
