Botox remains one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the U.S., with more than 4 million procedures performed each year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Botox injections can help treat fine lines and wrinkles, diminishing their appearance and allowing you to get smoother, more youthful skin.

At Simply Radiant, we offer Botox cosmetic treatments. Learn more about this option and how you can benefit from Botox injections.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin made from botulinum bacteria. This neurotoxin temporarily prevents muscles from tensing, smoothing out the skin above them. It can do this by interrupting the nerve signals your brain sends to particular muscles.

For a muscle to be able to contract, nerves have to release a chemical messenger where the muscle cells meet nerve endings. The chemical messenger, acetylcholine, attaches itself to the muscle cell receptors and causes the muscles to contract.

Botox prevents the release of acetylcholine. For this reason, Botox treatments are particularly helpful in the treatment of dynamic wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles are the wrinkles that develop when you move your muscles to make facial expressions. As you get older, the production of the proteins that give your skin its firmness and hydration decreases. This means that expressions like smiling or frowning can start to leave lines and wrinkles on your face.

Some of the most common dynamic wrinkles include the following:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines

By freezing the muscles that cause these wrinkles, Botox can help you get smoother skin. Below are some of the most popular injection areas for Botox:

  • Under the eyes
  • Around the eyes
  • Forehead area
  • Between the eyebrows
  • Above the nose
  • Around the mouth

The best candidates for Botox treatments are people who are at least 18 years old and in good overall health. The right candidate is someone who still has some skin elasticity but has moderate signs of aging, especially dynamic wrinkles.

People who have an allergy to any of the Botox ingredients, have severe illnesses, have muscle weakness issues, or are taking antibiotics that can interfere with Botox are not the right candidates for this cosmetic option. We will suggest alternative solutions for the concerns you have.

Reasons to Choose Botox

Botox is a minimally invasive procedure that can deliver quick results. You don’t have to worry about complicated aftercare instructions or taking time off of work for recovery. The procedure itself is very quick, with many people choosing to get the injections during their lunch break.

Another reason Botox treatments can be a good choice for many people is that they can also have preventative effects. Botox can teach your muscles to be softer, helping you prevent future wrinkles and fine lines. That is why it can be a good choice even for people in their 20s.

Botox is an affordable alternative to facelifts and other surgical procedures. It is also not a permanent option, so you can try it out to see if you like the results.

How to Prepare for Botox Injections

To ensure that you are a good candidate for Botox injections, we require a consultation. We will assess the areas you want to treat and get your medical history to make certain you are healthy enough for the injections. Let us know of any medications you take and tell us about any other cosmetic procedures you have undergone in the past.

The week before Botox injections, we ask that you stop taking anti-inflammatory medications. You also want to avoid alcohol, especially wine, in the week leading up to the injections. We recommend you stop smoking so that healing is easier.

Avoid getting other cosmetic procedures right before the injection, especially things like chemical peels.

The Day of the Injections

Come to your appointment with a clean face. Don’t wear makeup or apply any creams, ointments, or lotions to the treatment areas.

Before beginning the injections, we will wash your face. We can apply topical anesthetics if you want them.

The entire procedure can take as little as 10 minutes.

Recovery and Results

You can return right back to your life after a Botox treatment. There are some things we do recommend, however.

You should not rub, scratch, or touch the treatment areas for a few hours. We’ll also ask you to avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours, as well as saunas, hot tubs, and other activities that cause extreme heat.

Wait a day before applying makeup, and don’t use any abrasive skincare products. Gentle facial cleansers are a good choice for the first couple of days. If you want, you can apply ice packs to the treatment areas throughout the first day.

You may begin to see results within 24 hours, but most people have to wait a day or two. Results can last up to four months. We can schedule follow-up appointments to ensure you maintain your smoother skin.
